Did you know that the pop group The Beatles formed a band in Liverpool in the UK in 1960 ? That is, nearly sixty years ago. They sang in the Cavern Club in that city. However, their first success came with the song ‘She Loves You’ in late 1963.
The Yellow Submarine
Even the younger generation will remember who the Beatles were. They wrote ‘The Yellow Submarine’ among many famous songs, and were known as the ‘Fab Four’. They also made an acclaimed film called ‘A Hard Day’s Night’. In addition, they received many awards, selling over 800 million albums worldwide. They were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. John Lennon wrote the song ‘Imagine’, one of the best-loved songs of all time.
As their popularity grew, a vast production of souvenirs appeared indeed on the market. Apart from records and signed photographs, all kinds of memorabilia became available, some with sky-high prices. For example, a hand-written letter to a friend from George Harrison, complete with hand-written envelope, is valued at US$ 2,500. In addition, a very rare poster, perhaps the only one in existence, is valued at a staggering US$ 44,000. This advertised a concert held with other groups at the beginning of 1963 in Wales. That is, several months before they first became popular.
Having divorced his first wife, John Lennon met and married Japanese Yoko Ono in 1969. She is an artist, song-writer and peace activist. All went well until 8 December 1980 when a fan shot him dead outside his house in Manhattan. He was 40 years old. The murderer is still in prison.
When another famous singer, David Bowie, heard the news he made the following announcement: “On this day, 8 December 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed outside his New York apartment.” He then performed the song ‘Imagine’.
Recognition for Yoko Ono
Very recently Yoko Ono has been recognized as co-author of ‘Imagine’. That is to say, 46 years after the song was composed. There is proof that John had said he had been ‘selfish’ not to have admitted this at the time. Other evidence has also become available which confirms the truth of the recognizion.
